Anxiety
Treatment approaches for young children with anxiety sometimes look a bit different than for older children and adolescents. Luckily, identifying and addressing anxiety at a young age can help young children and their parents develop skills necessary for addressing stressful situations across the lifespan. At The Center for Pediatric Psychology, we draw from multiple evidence-based treatment modalities in order to adapt our anxiety treatment plans to individual families’ needs.
We utilize both Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to strengthen the parent-child relationship, build skills to identify and articulate anxious thoughts and feelings, and confidently face anxiety-inducing situations. It is also important to understand the role that adults can play in childhood anxiety. Dr. Busch is trained in Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), a parent-based anxiety treatment program aimed at reducing parental accommodation of child anxiety. In this program, we help guide parents in how to better support their anxious child through difficult situations while building their tolerance for anxious feelings. Our approach to anxiety treatment is rooted in evidence-based treatments while also enabling us to flexibly adapt them to child and family needs as they arise throughout treatment.
