Developmental Delays / Medical Complexity

Young children sometimes experience delays in their development or medical events that affect their developmental trajectory, such as a NICU stay. For young children, it can be very frustrating observing peers or siblings acquiring abilities that they, themselves, have not yet developed. This can sometimes result in behaviors that can be difficult to manage, especially when language or comprehension skills may be delayed.

How to Help a Child with a Developmental Delay

When working with children with developmental delays, our goal is to help them to develop the skills that will allow them to thrive as they grow along their own developmental trajectory (which may not necessarily mean “catching up” to their peers). We have extensive experience empowering parents as they learn to support their child’s unique needs and help them communicate and build adaptive functioning skills in a way that is developmentally appropriate for their child. While utilizing evidence-based strategies for addressing behaviors, we also utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) strategies to support parents and caregivers as they navigate a new and possibly unexpected direction for their child’s development.
